During your senior year as an SLHOS student, you have two Capstone opportunities to fulfill your Advanced College Writing General Education requirement (CSD 430). You must have senior standing to engage in the SLHOS Sr. Capstone experience.
OPTION #1: Traditional Capstone Course This non-competitive option provides a workshop-based scientific research and writing experience (CSD 430). You will work with the instructor of the course to develop a research topic and conduct a comprehensive literature review on that topic. The final product is a literature review and an oral presentation. This traditional capstone opportunity is a one-semester commitment (fall 2024 only).
OPTION #2: Mentored Capstone Course
This competitive Capstone option provides you the opportunity to participate in a year-long lab-based research mentorship with an SLHOS faculty member. If awarded this opportunity, you will enroll in both the academic course (CSD 430) that will allow you to meet your Advanced College Writing requirement and enroll in up to 4 independent study research credits (CSD 490) under the guidance of your assigned Faculty Research Mentor. If you are awarded this additional research/lab experience, you will develop your CSD 430 Capstone course literature review under the guidance of your Faculty Research Mentor. You will also work with your Faculty Research Mentor to determine if you are eligible to participate in a research project that includes a poster presentation for the UM Conference of Undergraduate Research (UMCUR). As part of a research lab, you may also be asked to contribute to ongoing research projects (e.g., project design, data collection/analysis, grant writing, conference proposal writing, publication). This mentored research opportunity is a two-semester commitment (fall 2024/spring 2025).
ALL juniors MUST complete the Sr. Capstone Application. Please complete the following online application - do not forget to click "SUBMIT". The deadline for this application is Friday, April 5, 2024.
